History
Liberia was the first African republic to declare its independence, and is the first and oldest modern republic in Africa. It retained its independence during the Scramble for Africa.
The old name that Liberia adopted was “Costa del Grano”. This is how it became since the Portuguese, the first Europeans to arrive on its coasts and in the region throughout the 15th century, began to practice, since the 1470s, the trade in malagueta pepper, the "grain of paradise", as it were. called the product in Europe. Later, the area, like the entire Atlantic coast and the surrounding regions, was the site of slave raids for Atlantic traffic. In particular, the region that Liberia occupies today suffered severely from the Great Atlantic Trade.
The Pepper Coast, also known as the Grain Coast, has been inhabited by indigenous peoples from Africa since at least the 12th century. The area now called Liberia was part of the Koya Kingdom from 1450 to 1898. The Kru ethnic group opposed the influx of Vai, forming an alliance with the Mane to stop the influx of Vai.
